Sad news as one of South Florida’s favorite local reporters turned anchorman, Todd Tongen has passed away at a young age. We here at The Dive Bar want to give our condolences and say RIP Todd Tongen. We will miss seeing you on our TVs.
Todd Tongen was with ABC South Florida affiliate WPLG for nearly thirty years, was found dead in his home. He was only 56-years-old..
According to WPLG, Tongen’s wife was out of town and unable to reach him so she asked a friend to check on him. Police were called and found him dead in the home.
A cause of death is not known at this time. What a total tragedy. Hopefully, we can find out soon what happened.
Tongen started his broadcasting career in Minnesota in 1983 as a radio DJ on a country western station. From radio, he moved to TV and became a weatherman and worked his way up to winning an Associated Press Award for best weather segment in 1988.
In 1989, Todd received the Associated Press Award for best feature report. He also won an Emmy Award for feature reporting and has been nominated six times. Pretty impressive. Todd is survived by his wife and two sons.
We wish his family and sons the best. Our hearts at The Dive Bar go out to them. Come on down here off the beach on Galt Ocean Mile in North Fort Lauderdale and have a drink in Todd’s honor. Don’t forget to pour a little out.
Remember that The Dive Bar has great pub grub, karaoke all week, live bands all month long, lot’s of cool and happy people, great vibes, stiff cocktails and the best staff this side of the Mississippi. We hope to see you down here ASAP. We will save a stool for you.
